Weekly Update Nov. 6-17 | Retakes, Remembrance Day, Weather, Fall Break, Volunteer, Spirit Day, School Council

**This is a 2-week update since it is a short week and next week is also due to Fall Break!**

Picture Retakes

Our picture retake day is on November 6.  It is a Monday so please mark you calendars.  All students are asked to have any proofs returned when retakes are being taken.  Please also email you child’s teacher to let them know that you are wanting them to have their picture re-done.

Remembrance Day Assembly

Our Remembrance Day assembly will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, Nov 8, 2023.  This is also Indigenous Veterans Day. We will be teaching our students about the importance of these days and how we can honour our veterans in a good way.  It is a time to reflect and honour our Veterans, including our Indigenous and the various Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Recess timings will be modified to accommodate the Remembrance Day assembly.

Dress for the Weather

With the snow and the cold weather, it is important for students to come to school prepared to go outside for recess and lunch recess as well as any outdoor learning, including Phys Ed, that may happen during the day.  Boots, Hats, Mitts and Snow pants when possible, as well as a warm winter jacket are requested in the winter.

Fall Break & Lost & Found

Our Lost & Found Cabinets are filling up!  Please ask your child(ren) to look for their belongings.  With the winter weather, we are starting to get a number of mittens, gloves and hats.  Since we will be going on Fall Break from Nov 9-14, students should make sure to take everything home that they might need when they go home on Wednesday.

Volunteer Possibilities

At our last School Council meeting, we selected a volunteer coordinator.  Sydney Sopiwynk is going to help us organize and ensure we have all the volunteers that we need to cover off special activities in the school.  If you have a valid Police clearance and are registered to volunteer with us, we would love to be able to call on you.  Please email Sydney at volunteerchaparral@gmail.com to be sure you are on the list.

Volunteer Clearances

We are finding that some volunteer clearances are not showing on our system if they were completed just prior to the change in process from the police service.  If you are not showing up on our list and have a copy of the clearance that you can share with us, we can make sure you still have access to our volunteering opportunities.

If you would like to Volunteer and have not completed a Police Clearance yet, please bring your government issued ID to the office and Edwina will give you the required letter so that you are able to come in.  2 pieces of government issued ID is required.  We can also get you set up at the Open House.

If you are already registered and would like to come in on a regular basis, please contact Edwina to be on our regular call list.  You can email her at eoewart@cbe.ab.ca

Our First Spirit Day – November 16

We will have our first Spirit Day at school.  The first day is Duplicate (twin/triplet/clone/doppleganger) Day.  This is a day where students and staff are invited to dress like each other.  Some may choose to plan together and dress in matching clothing.  Others may choose to dress like one of the teachers/staff members and see if we can figure out who they might be.  Either way, students have a choice of how to duplicate their appearance for the day.

All communication with our School Council can be done via their email at: chaparralschoolcouncil@gmail.com

Weekly Mantra

I Have A Growth Mindset (SEL Competency: Self-Awareness, Self-Management)

Your brains and talent are just the starting point. Your most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Having a growth mindset is about resilience. When the big things feel out of control, focus on what is in front of you. When it feels like you still have a long way to go, think about how far you have already come.

Weekly Mantra (Week of Nov. 13)

It’s Okay To Need Help. (SEL Competency: Self-Awareness, Relationship Skills)
Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it. Facing things alone isn’t the only option. Sometimes asking for help is the hardest thing to do, but usually we feel very relieved when we do.
