Traffic Safety

Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.

Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary

The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.

Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.

Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

School Safety Patrols - AMA

Safety Patrols are compromised of our Grade 5 and 6 students.  They are on duty from 8:40 to 8:55 A.M. and from 3:30 PM to 3:45 PM each day to ensure student safety. Patrols will not be on duty if the temperature, including the wind chill, is -20C or colder. Patrols may also be cancelled when visibility is poor or when the roads are excessively slippery. When school patrols are not on duty, we would appreciate the cooperation of all parents and students in ensuring that crossings are completed with extra care and attention.

Drop Zone

We have many families and buses arriving at our school each day and want to ensure that students are as safe as possible. We ask that families drop students off on Chaparral Drive, in the drop zone, and not the bus zone of the school. This way your children can safely walk across the grass to their doors.

If parking at the school, please use street parking. The back parking lot is reserved for staff. Please help keep the traffic flowing by not parking along the bus drop off zone as this causes traffic problems for the buses arriving at the school.

  • Keep the traffic moving. Avoid drop off in the staff parking lot.
  • Respect our neighbours. Avoid blocking their driveways.
  • As a courtesy to all, if you need to park (i.e. stop for more than 2 minutes), please leave your vehicle in a place outside of the drop-off zone.
  • Teach your child to cross safely at a crosswalk, listen to our student patrollers, and to always avoid walking between parked cars or buses.
  • Instruct children who cycle, or ride a scooter or skateboard to school to walk onto school property. Scooters and bikes must be locked up to the front bike racks as there is no room in classrooms to store these items.

For information see the Security page.

Parking

We strive to be a good neighbour and encourage all of our visitors to be respectful to our community. There is very limited parking around the school.  If you plan to drive your students to school, please consider parking 1-3 blocks away from the building.  The curb side directly in front of the main entrance of the school on Chaparral Drive is a dedicated bus zone.  All other curb side parking is considered kiss and drive.  The residences across the street from the school feature large driveways that make parking very difficult.  It is extremely important that we respect the homeowners by NOT blocking their driveways.  Chapalina Close also becomes a busy spot at drop off.  Again, this is a kiss and drive zone, meaning curb side parking should not exceed 2 minutes.

We have been notified by Calgary City Police and City of Calgary Bylaw, that the parking in front of the school will be monitored during the school year.  This means that vehicles parked in the bus zone at any time may receive a ticket.  This is a drop zone only and vehicles are not to be unattended or stay parked for an extended time.

Students should dismount and walk bikes and scooters once they reach the sidewalks around the school, on the school grounds, and in the crosswalks.

Parents/guardians must remain outside of the school to drop off their children.  They must not enter the school during high traffic times unless approved by the principal. Parents are reminded that supervision prior to our 8:40 AM soft entry, is the responsibility of the parents.  Other than Student Safety Patrols, there is no adult supervision outdoors in the morning.

We will have our Student Safety Patrols early in the fall, however they will not be in place for the first few days.  Adult supervisors will continue monitor for safe crossing.

Alternative Arrangements for Pick Up

When a different caregiver is picking children up it is extremely important that a clear meeting place is established and that both the child and the pick up person are very clear as to where they are to connect. Our office becomes very busy at the end of the day as we load buses etc. It is very difficult accommodate phone calls and last minute arrangements for playdates. These need to be made well in advance of the end of the school day.
