Weekly Update Feb. 5-9 | Black History Month, Pink Shirt Day, Busing, Parking, Ice Around the School Spirit Day, School Council Meeting, I Manage My Time Well

Black History Month

During the month of February, Calgary Board of Education students and staff will celebrate and explore the many contributions of Black Canadians, peoples, and communities worldwide. Black History Month is an opportunity for schools to amplify and spotlight the innovative, courageous, and inspiring voices, stories, and contributions of Black Canadians and communities.

Pink Shirt Day

We are excited to share that we have a vendor who is able to supply our school with pink shirts for Anti-Bullying Day.  This year Pink Shirt Day is February 28.  If you are interested in purchasing a pink shirt for your child, they are available at: https://www.shepherdoriginals.com/shop/school-apparel/34  At the checkout, use CHAPARRAL as the coupon code for discounted apparel and free shipping.  All orders will be delivered to the school prior to the day.

Bus Delays and Bus Safety

We want to recognize and acknowledge the frustration and uncertainty that the bussing difficulties are causing for families.  Some parents have already reached out and I know you have also communicated with the Transportation department.  I would like to encourage you to continue to communicate.  Any emails received by the school, will be forwarded.  Please note that although we also feel the same frustrations, the school is unable to control the bus schedule and driver shortage.

Parking and Traffic

Please remember to keep the front of the school free of parking.  The immediate space in front of the school is for busses only.  It is important that this space be left for them to safely pull in to pick up or drop off students.

Additionally, please be aware of our School Safety Patrols.  Our Grade 5 & 6 patrol leaders are working hard to get our students safely across the street, to and from school.  Please make sure to be aware of the guidance they are providing and give them the space to do a great job.  This includes following their direction and stopping with space behind the crosswalks at each of the crossings.

Thank you for helping to keep our students safe.

Ice Around the School

Please be very aware of the ice around the school.  The warming weather and freezing overnight has caused an incredibly slippery schoolyard, including sidewalks, field, compound and playground areas.

Unfortunately, we had a number of injuries this past week caused by these conditions.  Mr. Joel is doing an excellent job of putting salt and rocks out each day, but these don’t stay and we still need to use caution when we are on the ice around the school.  Hopefully we can minimize the number of mishaps if we all use caution.

Spirit Day

Our next Spirit Day is February 8.  It will be Favorite Book or Character in a Book Day.  Students are invited to dress like their favorite book character or to represent their favorite book in their own way.  We cannot wait to see your creativity for this one!!  I wonder how many Harry Potter’s or Pete the Cats we will have??

Weekly Mantra

I Manage My Time Well. (SEL Competency: Responsible Decision Making, Self-Management)
You are in control of you. The bad news is, time flies. The good news is, you’re the pilot. Time is what we want most but use worst. What do you think this means?
