Weekly Update Dec. 4-8 | Winter Concert, Cell Phones, Food Drive, Adopt-A-Family, School Council Meeting, Fun Lunches
Important Information
Winter Concert Information
We are so excited to share a Winter Concert with our school community this year. Our Winter Concert will be presented by our Kindergarten – Grade 3 classes. In order to accommodate as many family members as possible, we will be splitting into 2 separate evenings, starting at 6:30pm. If your child’s last name starts with the letters A-L, they will be presenting on Wednesday December 13 and those with the last name starting with M-Z will be presenting on Thursday December 14th. Our Grade 3 actors will need to attend both evenings.
Each student will be able to have 3 guests to watch them perform on the night they are assigned. We will also have an afternoon show on each of the days as a dress rehearsal for the evening show. Family and guests are invited to attend these performances also.
We are unable to use Eventbrite so we will be sending home tickets with each student. Tickets will be required to enter at the door.
Paul Davis Presentation
This past week, we were fortunate enough to have Paul Davis, a cyber security, and social media safety expert, speak with our Grade 4-6 students and again to our parent communities from Chaparral School, Fish Creek School, Mid Sun Jr High and Midnapore School. His message was direct and intense. He presented facts and shared best practices for using social media and technology in general. We all learned something, most importantly, how to keep our children safe.
For those who did attend, here is the link that Paul promised to the parent group at the end of the presentation. https://beacons.ai/internetsafety
Thanks again to our School Council for sponsoring our participation in these sessions.
Cell Phones at School
Students are reminded that cell phones coming to school needs to be away for the day. Our school policy is that when students enter the school, the phones go away for the day! There has been in increased number of students bringing phones out during the day, at recess and at lunch. This is not allowed under this policy.
Parents, we are asking for your support in reminding your students that the phones need to be off and, in their backpacks once they arrive at school. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or broken technology. Staff will remind students to put the technology away, and if necessary, phones will be placed on the teacher’s desk until the end of the day and parents will be notified.
Mayor’s Food Drive
We are collecting non-perishable food items for the Mayor’s Food Drive. Students and families are invited to bring in canned or boxed food items and place them in one of the boxes in the front foyer. The food will be picked up closer to the holidays.
Lost & Found
Our Lost & Found Cabinets are overflowing! Please be sure to collect your child(ren)’s lost items during conferences. Any leftover clothing that is still not claimed by the Christmas break, will be donated. We sadly do not have room to store all of these lovely items.

All communication with our School Council can be done via their email at:chaparralschoolcouncil@gmail.com
Adopt-a-Family
Our School Council is sponsoring some Christmas hampers to support families in need this Christmas. In the very near future, we will communicate the wish lists and give opportunities for families to offer support if they are able. This will come in a separate email during the coming week.

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday December 12 at 6:30pm via an online format. This will be a special meeting to approve the newly re-vamped Chaparral School Council Bylaws. Please watch for an update in the coming weeks. Quorum will be required for this meeting.

Weekly Mantra
I matter. We all matter. (SEL Competency: Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills)
It makes no difference where people are from, what they look like, who they love, or what they believe. Everyone matters. Everyone is afraid of something, loves something, is working on something. What is something that you are afraid of? Working on? We are all the same.
